Step into a traditional Japanese spice shop and discover the art behind one of Japan’s most iconic seasonings: shichimi tōgarashi, the seven-flavor spice blend. In this hands-on workshop, you’ll be guided by a knowledgeable instructor who introduces each of the classic shichimi ingredients — from fragrant citrus peels and nutty sesame seeds to warming chili and tingly sanshō pepper. You’ll learn how each spice contributes to balance, aroma, and heat, and how regional and personal preferences shape the final blend. After the introduction, it’s time to create your own. Using traditional tools, you’ll grind, blend, and adjust the spices to suit your personal taste. Prefer something bright and citrusy? Extra spicy? More mellow and nutty? You’ll test and tweak your blend until it’s just right — completely customized to you. At the end of the workshop, you’ll package your finished shichimi to take home, a flavorful and personal souvenir of your time in Japan.
